Why aren't the number of teams in the divisions and conferences of MLB balanced like the NFL & NBA?

I need to train for softball!?
The number of teams is comparable to the NFL and NBA (30 for MLB and NBA, and 32 for the NFL). The MLB however has a couple of problems that the other leagues do not.1. MLB teams play all but 15 or 18 games against teams within their own league. This is the equivalent of NBA teams only playing 7 or 10 games against teams from the other Conference (East vs West).
2. On all but one or two days per week (usually either Monday or Thursday), every team in baseball is playing. When a baseball team goes to a city to play, they are there for two, three, or four days/games. When an NBA team goes to a city they are there for one game. The same goes for the NFL.
3. If the teams were evenly dispursed between the American and National Leagues, there would be 15 teams in each league which would mean that one team in each league would not be playing for three days at a time. Now, you could say that this would be a time when those two teams from different leagues could play each other. However, then WAY too many interleague games would be played and the "integrity" of the separation of the leagues would be in jeopardy.
In my opinion, one of two things need to happen because, in a way, you are right -- there is a disparity between the AL and the NL (well, many disparities, but schedule-wise for the purposes of this post). Either another round of expansion needs to occur, putting two teams in the AL. Or, a form of contraction needs to happen.
I would merge the two Florida teams and split the games between Miami and Tampa, and keep the team in the NL. I would then move the Milwuakee Brewers back to the AL Central. This would necessitate the move of the Pirates to the NL East and either the Royals into the AL West or the Indians into the AL East.
Obviously, my friends and I haven't spent WAY too much time thinking about how diluted baseball is.. :)
It goes on deck, in the whole, in the parking lot, then what?
I think it has to do with Bud Selig bringing the Brewers into the National League ( Bud Selig being the former owner of the Brewers ) I know, it makes no sense at all. What are your season predictions??
bud seligs interleague play made the schedule uneven. so its bud seligs foult.Because baseball doesn't go interleague very much, and the schedule is built around series, not individual games like the NBA, NHL, or NFL. Having 15 teams in the American League and 15 in the National League would be pretty dumb. In a weekend series, who would the 15th team play? You can't give teams an entire 3-4 consecutive days off every other month! So they had no choice but to go 14 and 16. If baseball ever adds two more teams, put them in the AL and go to two eight-team divisions in each league.
Are the yankees good for baseball?
the reason for the uneven amount of teams, is to allow for days off and non inter league play. If the teams were even, than interleague play would have to be the whole season.More Questions & Answers...
