Why do MLB teams always sign 16 year olds from latin american countries...are these 16 yr olds awesome ?

Question:the one thing i dont get is..in the US, people graduate HS, gets drafted, signed, whatever.

but in latin american, most noticably dominican republic.i always see people get signed at age 16. why is that? are these 16 year olds special or something? i guess they have to be?

but how come i dont see any 16 year olds from the states getting signed?

plus, i would think that in the states baseball is alot more organized with school teams, while in the DR/latino countries...their baseball system is alot less organized.

I want to start golfing. somebody give me the best advice for starting this activity?

Because they are cheap. So if they don't pan out a club hasn't investesed alot of money. American kids with talent demand money and even if it may not seem like much compared to pro salaries. I read and article relating to Jackie Robinson and the decline in Afro American Major Leaguers since the 70's that has a pretty rational explanation: The link is in my sources and an excerpt is below.

Baseball, as Solomon admitted, made a decision about 20 years ago – based largely on economics – to spend money building academies in Latin American countries such as the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. The players were teenagers, disposable if they didn't pan out, cheap to sign if they did. Even though the signing bonuses in Latin America have gone up exponentially, topping $2 million for the top talent, the best bargains still come from there. Nearly 30 percent of players in the major leagues last season were Latino, a number that has grown almost inversely proportionate to the number of African-Americans.

Adding because I saw the racist comment and the note about the DR Academies. Those academies have been built through investments made by MLB to entice the talent down there and they do come for less money per player to the minor league system. MLB has not done this to the same extent for poor African American Communities in America. If anyone is racist in this matter it is MLB not the posters here. Put your race card away. It's a $$$ Card.

Should players be thrown out of the game..?

its illegal in the U.S. unless they graduated high school.
the latin american players don't have high school and this is their only way out of the poor country. besides its not until their 18 they can come to the states and start playing profesionaly.

What are those new team necklaces wore by baseball players called?

There's some blatantly racist answers being put up here, not to mention that the original question has some slightly racist views on Latin America. Please people don't make assumptions about Latin America, as most of these countries are equal to the US in many ways! Including education and quality of life. Not to mention HEALTH CARE!

You say that because we are in the US baseball is more organized than in Latin-American countries (since there are no Latino Countries).

This is not so. The DR has many baseball academies that hone and perfect a baseball players craft from the time they are 9 or 10, which is why it's not uncommon to see 16 year olds sign with major league teams. Secondly, most MLB teams has permanent offices in many Latin American countries since their baseball leagues often are either Winter leagues or Full Year leagues, since climates are alot warmer.

Baseball in many parts of Latin America is more popular soccer, much more organized than in the US. It would behoove you to do a little bit of research.

How many baseballs does an average major league use?

Easiest answer is that minors, in the U.S., can not be bound by a contract they signed..period!

Plus, baseball teams want to find and groom talent. There are some talented kids in Latin America, and teams compete to be the first to find them. They are signed to small contracts, by major league standards, and the teams can afford doing so. It's like investing in a startup company. Chances are you'll find one that pays big dividends later.

Who do you think is the all-time best STRIKE OUT pitcher in MLB?

Ok heres the deal. Kids from Latin American countries play alot of ball but without the matterials they use in the U.S. And it's amazing. These kids dont even use ral baseballs. They might use like cork for a ball and a broom stick for a bat. So when scouts go check 'em out they look really good.

Who's your favorite 5 tool player?

What does a sandwich pick in the MLB draft mean?

I need major baseball help!!!?

maybe because the latinos play all day long. the weather is good down there and maybe some dont even go to school.
