Are you still a first baseman, if your are a women's softball player.?

Question:I am writing an article on an athlete of the month and am having trouble. Do you call a women's softball player a first baseman...if not what would the terminology be for her.

Yup. Women softball players are called first, second or third basemen. I have no idea why, but it does seem cumbersome to call them first basewomen. One of those charming little baseball traditions.

you can say that...or just say the woman plays first base!! i played 3rd base all my life and i wouldn't be offended if someone said i was a 3rd baseman...i always said "i played 3rd base"...but why don't you ask her what she prefers?

I know you want to be politically correct. You also have second and third baseman too. I think it would sound kind of silly saying first, second or third basewoman so I would not worry about offending anyone. Baseman in the context of the sport can be considered non-gender and applies to either guy or girl.

Why can't the Yankee/Red Sox feud have there own column in sports?

I am going to propose to the American Softball Federation that they change this. The new positions will be called 1st baseperson, 2nd baseperson, 3rd baseperson, and more importantly, instead of shortstop it will be called petitestop.
