How early would i be able to play first base and hit after having tommy john surgery?

Question:im a pitcher but i also play first base so id like to be able to get the surgery then maybe a week or so after the surgery be able to hit and play first base, would that be possible?

Answers:

Who is the best...?

For pitchers, the surgery requires a full year of rehabilitation and typically another year pitching before returning to pre-injury form.

Essentially, the body must convert a tendon into a ligament, get it carrying blood again and train it to start working as a ligament. (A ligament connects bones, stabilizing a joint. A tendon attaches muscle to the bone.) It is very weak immediately after the surgery, and the rebuilding process must be gradual.

Following the surgery, the elbow is immobilized in a hard brace for about a week, then the patient begins exercises to regain limited range of motion the second week. By the second or third week, he can use the arm for everyday tasks like eating and combing his hair. He can start swinging a golf club after three months and usually begin a light-tossing program at four months.

The throwing program typically starts four months after surgery, but it can be a month earlier or two months later. This will be a slow and tedious process and should not be rushed by any means. Don't go too fast, and don't ignore your shoulder as you rehabilitate the elbow. Keeping your shoulder in shape is very important. If you let it rip as soon as you think the arm feels ready, you'll be visiting the doctor again.

Medically, most pitchers are ready to return to action in 12-15 months. Position players could be ready for action a couple months earlier. Frequently, it's another year before they return to form.

You could probably be playing first base again, at the earliest, 9 to 10 months after the surgery. You WILL NOT be playing first base one week after the surgery. You will still be in an immobilized cast then. So the answer to your question is an obvious no. It is not possible to be back in one week. You wouldn't be able to start swinging until about 4 months after the surgery.

I remember Brian Roberts dislocated his non-throwing elbow at the end of the season on September 20, 2005. He uerwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery on his elbow on September 30, 2005. He began to swing for the first time a week or two into February, a little more than 3 months after the surgery. He utimately wasn't swinging the bat at 100% until the end of spring training, 6 months after the surgery.

The earliest for you to get back would be about 5 months...and that would only be as a designated hitter. The earliest you could be playing first base would be about 10 months. You could be back on the mound pitching as early as 12-15 months.

Good luck with that elbow, buddy. Rehab hard. Do everything you're supposed to do and do no deviate from your program once. You will have a lot of work to do to help you get back into shape.

What is the record most strikeouts in a game?

Dont think you will be able to come back that soon. The average person that has that surgery is normally out at least a year. The rehab is the critical part for full recovery. If you don't rehab properly then it could be longer.

What is the average speed at which a third baseman throws the ball to first in MPH.?

NOOOOOO!! It would not be possible to play first. Hit, maybe you would have to ask a doctor, but anything with throwing no. anyway, in case you don't know rehab time is minimum like 10 months for pitching.

rehab for tommy john surgery is no joke. it'll take you a good 4-6 months before you can efficiently start a throwing program. and that's just throwing...not even throwing hard. sorry :(

How do you use the Euphis pitch in MLB 07 the show?

It'll be at least 6 weeks before you're released to even use the arm for simple motor actions like brushing your teeth or dressing yourself. If you were able to come back and play in a year fully recovered, you'd be ahead of about 90% of people who have the procedure. Some people take up to two years to come back and some never make it back.
