Ted WilliamsThe magnificient Ted Williams. The last man to have a .400 season average. He was at .401 with one game to go. His manager and team mates urged him to sit out the final game to preserve the average. Instead he played and went 4 for 4. Probably the greatest pure hitter I ever saw. If his career hadn't been interrupted by service during WWII and again during the Korean war his records would have been even better. The Boston press always villified him for not hitting to all fields. The other teams put what they called the Williams shift together and vacated left field when he was up. With three outfielders between straight away center and the right field line, he still managed a high .300 lifetime average. One ump at the time said, "If Ted doesn't swing it's a ball".
I want a singles hitter or a guy that walks a lot . I DO NOT want to see a slugger come to bat in that position. Give me Keith Hernandez for this one. To me, Keith Hernandez was one of the best two strike hitters I've ever seen play.

I pick Barry Bonds because he is the only player who I know to have drawn an intentional walk with the bases loaded. The guy is that respected. In a tied game with the bases loaded you would be forced to pitch to him and thats trouble for the pitcher.

Since you ask any player past or present. To me it's pretty easy, Babe Ruth. It doesn't get much more clutch than that guy was.However as an Orioles fan, if I had to pick an Orioles player from any time, past or present. It would be Eddie Murray. And not simply because he's a hall of famer, but because of his two homeruns that he hit on the road against the Phillies in game 5 of the world series. Murray in that game alone was a big part of the reason offensively that the Orioles won the series in 5 games.

The best big game, clutch hitter I have seen in 50+ years of watching baseball is George Brett. The bigger the game the tougher the situation the better he hit. You need a single he hit a single you need a HR he hit a HR. And, he did it off the best of the best - 3HR in one ALCS game against Catfish Hunter - 2 game winning HR's off Goose Gossage in the ALCS -4 for 4 with 2HR's in game three of the 85 ALCS with the Royals down 2 games to Toronto, in the same game Brett also made one of the best defensive plays I have ever seen from a third baseman, >backhanding a smash over the 3B bag, 15 feet behind the bag and crossing into foul territory Brett threw across his body to throw the runner out at the plate<

A great clutch hitter is great all the time in big situations. I hate(not really) to bust the bubble of all those Reggie Jackson fans but in 11 ALCS series Jackson hit .227 with and OB% of .298 & SLG of .380 >He didn't do a whole lot to get his teams into the WS!

As I read down the list of names given by people, while all good I just knew my guy wasn't ever going to be mentioned. Then I got to Cardsfan55's post and he nailed it.George Brett.Sparky Anderson once stated that he'd never let George Brett beat him, even if it meant walking him with the bases loaded and up only a run because at least they'd have a chance. Of course that scenerio never occurred, but you should get the point. Brett was just that deadly when the game was on the line.
Brett also had a big game in Game 7 of the 1985 WS and had the game tying hit in the deciding game 5 of an ALCS only to see Chris Chambliss get his homer. He also had the series clinching homerun in the 1980 ALCS. The list goes on and on with Brett.

The guy I want is Paul Molitor he is a guy that would make contact have a good chance of getting on base.
