How do I get a pro scout to come to my softball league in Whitfield, AL?
There are a lot of choices there. Most won't make the Hall of Fame. Those that I agree with are:Curt Schilling
Manny Ramirez
Mariano Rivera
A-Rod
Derek Jeter
Jim Thome
Johan Santana (If he continues his dominance)
Vlad Guerrero
Ichiro ?
John Smoltz
Tom Glavine
Pedro Martinez
Barry Bonds
Omar Vizquel ?
Albert Pujols
Everyone else has a lot more to do to make the Hall. Injuries and decline tend to catch players. That is why longevity are so important to making it.
Why do dummy fans say: dude! it's way too early to speculate?
you forgot to mentionivan rodriguez
gary sheffield
jeremy bonderman
kenny rogers
brandon inge
justin verlander
joel zumaya
Harold Reynolds - What's he doing now?
I don't have time to tell you why all these players won't make it or probably won't. but i'll tell you a few. (except for the maybe's)damon - hasn't had any real big numbers
mauer - only 2 full seasons
morneau - 1 good year
teixeira - not enough good seasons
young - never had an amazing year
gagne - was lights out, but for 2-3 years
street - 2 good years and many closers don't make it
so wagner, k-rod also won't
rolen and edmonds - not consistant
some of these guys are too young to tell (reyes, mauer, cabrera)
some don't have enough good years or good enough numbers (damon, lee, tejada)
making the hall of fame isnt so easy
How come some players always bat left but throw right and vice versa?
I'd say every "closer" you put on that list is a stretch. Not because they arent good at what they do, I just see a big "rethinking" coming of what a Hall of Fame Closer actually is. Because of how a Save has changed over the last 20 years or whatever, closing games as gotten a little easier.A few others are stretches as well, or just way too early to tell. Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Carlos Lee,even Pujols are among those.
I'm a big cardinal fan, have been forever, and I have to admit that Edmonds probably wont make it. Although Ozzie Smith made it on his Glove alone (basically) so you never know.
I'd say you've compiled a list of the best players playing today and over the last decade, but most of them are still too young to know. It is all about consistency and longevity, and only a few players on that list have both. (A-rod, Jeter, Smoltz, Glavine, Bonds, Pedro, Hoffman, Maddux, and Man-Ram are shoo-ins)
Also, Kent, Konerko and Chavez are big, BIG, maybes. Helton too. If Jeff Bagwell doesnt make it, and he might not, Helton won't
I think your list is way too comprehensive. Remember, the HOF committe only lets guys in who get 75% of the vote. Usually that's only 2-3 guys a year. So in a decade they might let in 20-30 guys. Most of the guys on the list will probably retire within a decade of each other. So you've got way too many.
Personally, I think the HOF will stick more to if the player was dominant for a decade as opposed to stats which may or may not be reliable. Closers for one are an emerging group and still have a tough time getting in. I think this will continue in the future. I think the same goes for DHs. So I think Hoffman and Rivera will go in for beginners. Then I think you'll have to average about 40 saves a year and have an ERA under 2.75 for your career to be considered which willl be difficult since longevity and closing doesn't, especially now, go hand-in-hand. Possibly Wagner, F-Rod, Nathan, and Gagne if they can get a got 10 years in of dominant closing. As for Dh's, Big Papi might have a chance if he continues to hit 40-50 Hrs a year for the next 10 years and up that 280s average he has.
For positional players I think the only who already have the dominance to get in are Bonds and Sosa. Others that have a streak of dominance and its a good bet they will continune to dominate for the next few years are ARod, Manny, Vlad, Puljos, Jeter, & Ichiro. The rest only have 1-2 years under their belt or just won't make it. I dont care if Andruw Jones sets the home run and outfield assist record, with a 260ish BA, he's not gettin in. Same goes for Dunn. I think Junior needs a few solid years ahead of him to compensate for the last few years of being injury prone. Because at this point, that's what the HOF voters will remember.
For pitchers Maddox and Clemens are a lock. I th think Johnson and Martinez get it also. You would think that Mussina, Glavine, Smoltz and Schilling would make it but they didn't have the same factor of dominance that the forementioned three did. Remember, Blyleven has 287 wins, 3701 K, 60 Shutouts, and a 3.31 ERA and he went DOWN in voting this year. He had great numbers but he was an all star once only got an MVP vote once and ranked no higher than 3rd the 3 times he got votes for CY Young. So he had great numbers but wasn't really dominant according to the HOF voters' minds.
I think these young players have enough years under their belt to have a shot one day: Oswalt and Santana. Halladay and Carpenter have plenty of years under their respective belts but have only been dominant for 2 or 3 years. And Carpenter's 4+ ERA wouldn't be touched by the HOF.
So in summary you have 55 players listed. ATM I think that 16 have a good chance, 10 others have an outside chance one day and the rest either only have 1-2 years of dominance or have a good career but dont deserve it b/c they never dominated for a span of years or have one or more stats not HOF worthy.
