Why can't the Mariners hang onto good players?

Question:I mean, there's A-rod, Ken Griffey Jr., Randy Johnson. They all play somewhere else now. And I hear that Ichiro is going to leave soon. Why can't the M's hold onto the good players?

Answers:

Who is better The Atlanta Braves Or The New York Mets And Why?

The reason the Mariners can't hang onto the players once they reach a certain level of ability is one of economics. A-Rod and Griffey were both 1st round draft picks of the Mariners. Randy Johnson was acquired in a trade with the old Expos (for Mark Langston I believe), and Ichiro was acquired in similar fashion to Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Red Sox. Let's not forget other quality players the Mariners drafted and/or traded - Jason Varitek, Jason Schmidt, Derek Lowe, Tino Martinez, Carlos Guillen, the list goes on.

In order to put buns in the seats, the team must set a certain cap on what they plan to spend in a given year. Do you retain one great player at 20 million a year, or 4 good ones at 5 million each that can all contribute? At 25 players on an active roster, with an average of 5 million paid to each player, your team would have a starting budget of 125 million dollars. Throw in someone of superstar status at 15-18 million per year and you see how out of hand payroll can become in short order.

If you set your budget too high, you also have to raise ticket prices, concessions, parking, and merchandise to offset the amount of payroll that you extend to one or two superstar players.

Baseball is a team game. I have yet to see one player win the 90+ games that it takes to make the playoffs by themselves.

As far as Ichiro leaving. Players typically decline in ability once they reach their 30's. With him on our team, the M's have still finished in the cellar the last few years. I say trade him mid-season to the National League for a starter, established middle relief, and a prospect or two. Thank you Ichiro for the excitement, gamesmanship, and dedication you have brought to the game, and best of luck on your future journeys.

Baseballcards?

maybe all that rain is too depressing to live in year in and out...seriously...doesnt look like the management there is willing to open the wallets wide enough to build or keep a championship level roster happy...(a lot like the Oakland As who wouldnt spend to keep a three peat champion together in the 70s, or the current team who lost 3 franchise pitchers and guys like Giambi, Dye, Tejada and others)

When exactly is the infield fly rule called?

You still bitter bout those guys? Ichy ain't goin no where, he's a cash cow! Don't forget to add Big Papi to that list!

Anyone know of any good sites for desktop wallpaper with MLB players?

In my opinion Ichiro would not be a loss no offense. The guy was a real *** in the World Baseball cup thing sayingn Korea could never beat them in 10 years--although Japan won the first World Baseball Cup thing-- Korea beat them the very first time they played them.
not a Ichiro Fan sory--

Who was the first Canadian ever to pay major-league baseball?

What I have found about the Mariners, it isn't the rain, it is the distance they have to travel for road games that some have expressed playing elsewhere. The wear and tear on their bodies traveling so much. Plus, the Mariners haven't been one to dish out hugh contracts like elsewhere. I see a lot of them get established there and continue on some where else. The Mariners are just a step in their resume.

Who is better?

Because it's about the money, they go were they will get the most for there service just like any job, you wouldn't take 10$ an hour if someone will pay you 20$. Supply and demand.

Who would you rather have on your team. Ichiro,Johnny Damon or Matsui?

I don't kow why but I don't think Ichiro will be back next year.I would be surprised if Sexson was too. Those 2 will go on to some other team and bat .350 with 55 HR.Thats how it always goes.

What company was going to give Joe DiMaggio an endorsement had he collected hit #57 ?

cause they suck

Is the Phillies season over like my bf said or do they just need retuning?

For the Mariners, along with every other baseball team, it's about the money. If a team doesn't have enough money to either draft or hold onto good players, they're not going to get any. They don't have the money, so they either don't get any good players or have to let them go.
