Accoding to a book I own called "Take Me Out To The Ballpark" by Josh Leventhal, It's peak capacity was 57,673, opened with a capacity of 49,275, and had a capacity of 49,676 until 1997 when it went up to 49,814.The largest crowd (the book was published in 2000) was 56,782 for Game 5 of the 1996 NLCSagainst the Braves. The largest regular season crowd was 53,415 against the Cubs on July 30, 1994.

The old Busch was a cookie cutter era park. Many of those places - Riverfront, Atlanta Fulton, Three Rivers etc. had the same look, same configuration, and pretty much the same capacity.
I think the listed capacity was somewhere around 60,000 - before the baseball only configuration. After the Cards NFL team flew to Phoenix, they started fixing Busch for the Cardinals MLB team.
Way up in the upper deck out in center field they built a shrine to the Cards playoff teams and stuff that took some seats out. I think the capacity from like 95 to last year when the new one was built - it was probably around 48,000.
check http://www.ballparks.com and hunt around, they'll list the various capacities through the history of the stadium.
