When a catcher doesn't catch the ball why does he give the ball to the offical only to receive a new ball?
Question:I was just watching some baseball and I noticed that when the ball hit the glove of the cather and the ball dropped, the catcher picked up the ball and handed it to the ump. The ump gave him a new ball and he shot back to the pitcher. Why does this happen?

Tom Boswell wrote about just how easy it is for a pitcher to do this. He told a story about Mike Flanagan and Dennis Martinez, very early in Flanagan's career. He took a ball, made two skuffs on it with a hanger, explaining that this was far more than any pitcher needed, and asked Martinez to catch a couple of long tosses in the clubhouse. It took one pitch for Martinez to raise a skeptical eyebrow, and two to not only recognize that the ball was scuffed, but how badly and how Flanagan had used the scuffs to his advantage.
If a pitcher holds the ball so that the scuff is to the first-base side, the ball will break, big time, towards the third-base side of the plate, etc.

I think it's because the ball is "bad luck" so they change it. Also it's dirty and a cleaner ball may be easier to throw.Whats a good baseball card pricing site?

Catcher will toss the ball to the umpire for it to be checked for a scuff, mark, dirt smudge, etc. A dent or scuff on the ball can give the pitcher an advantage on putting movement on the pitch. Will Pete Rose get into the Hall of Fame before or after Barry Bonds? Will Pete Rose ever get in?
when the ball hits the ground it can become scuffed, which can give the pitcher an advantage. To nullify the advantage the umpire puts a new ball in playHow do I calculate a pitchers earned run average?
sometimes the batter or the ump will ask for the ball if it hits the ground because it could be scuffed and if it it is scuffed the pitcher can use it to his advantage as far as movement on his pitches and stuff. But then again i have seen balls been hit-fielded -thrown to first- then back to the pitcher i think it all depends on if someone asks for it

In MLB, a ball can only be in play for a certain number of pitches. Also, if the ump asks him for it, the catcher (any player or on-field personnel, actually) has to give the ball up. The balls don't last long, as they need to be very white, very smooth, and perfectly round. A really good umpire can look at and feel a ball for those things, and quickly reject any that don't cut it. The home team is responsible for having enough of them on hand, and the umpires inspect them before the game.More Questions & Answers...
