I found a great article with a good idea on why it happened. It seems that Webster (dictionary guy) wanted to try and differentiate american english from british english by changing spellings to make for more simplified words and words that look how they sound. Around the early 1900's sox was the common spelling for socks, and it ended up sticking. (White Sox, Red Sox)
