I was just wondering when a batter steps into the batters box for the first time what is their batting average

Question:When a batter steps into the batters box for the first time of the season, what is their batting average. I am pretty sure it is .000, but I have a friend that swears when you bat for the first time your average is 1000. Then I was also told by them because you start at 1000 if you are 0-1 your average is .500. I was like no if you are 1-2 or 2-4 your average would then be .500. If you could please get back to me with the correct answer please do. Thanks

Mathematically, your batting average before you have an at-bat is undefined. Batting average is hits divided by at-bats. If AB = 0 then you're dividing by zero, which is not possible. Thus, your average is undefined, or non-existent.

But you're right, if you've batted 0-1 there's no mathematical way you could be .500, it just doesn't work that way. You are most defiantly .000 because you are currently hit less.
If you struck out a thousand times you wouldn't be sitting at .001, you would be at .000, and if you got 500 hits out of a thousand, you would be at .500.
