Rediculous awards..?

Question:I think the gold glove award is rediculous. I love the thought of it. Giving the best player at each position recognition for their defensive plays and talents to that side of the ball is a great honor. However, the MLB gets lazy and fails to look at who the best players are. They choose the same player every year, despite if he was or was not the best player that year. I am a Minnesota fan, and even I didnt think Torii Hunter deserved the Gold Glove two years ago, when he only played a half a season. There is a story like this every year. Anyone else?

Should sammy sosa be put in the hall of fame?

What about the gold glove that Rafael Palmeiro won in 1999... during a season in which he only played first base (the position he won the gold glove for) in 28 games, and served as the DH for the rest?

That was probably the most ridiculous happening in the history of the gold glove.

Personally, I've always found the MVP award a bit absurd. Most Valuable Player? I mean... what do they mean by Valuable?

How can Alex Rodriguez win MVP of the league while playing for the Yankees? He's not even the most valuable player on the Yankees! Mariano Rivera is!

How could Justin Morneau win it last year, when Johan Santana was CLEARLY more vital to their success?

And how is a guy who makes $20Million a year, for 50 homers more valuable than a guy who makes $2 Million a year for 25 homers?

By that mode of thinking, Aubrey Huff should have won the MVP in 2003, when he hit .311 with 34 HRs and 107 RBIs for the Devil Rays, and made only $325,000.

Can u get ejected if u slide into first base ?

But yes, this is a stupid popularity award.

If you're in little league what's your teams record?

Comeback player of the year is a gay award!

I hate when they give it to someone who had a average of about .275 and 90 RBI's and 25 HR's a year before and then they hit .300 105 RBI's and 35 HR's the next year and they call that a "Comeback". That's pathetic!

Now maybe a REAL comeback player this year will be Sammy Sosa, that's a REAL comeback!

Lee (Chicago Cubs) is now Battling 422. What is the farest into the season that anyone has batted > 400?

Utterly indefensible (no pun intended, but wince if you want to):

Palmeiro, 1999 AL 1B GG
Griffey, 1995 AL OF GG

Dumb, although typical, voting results:

Sosa, 1998 NL MVP
Gonzalez, 1996 AL MVP
Welch, 1990 AL CYA

Denied:

Alex Rodriguez would have won the AL ROY in 1995 if he'd played enough, but Lou "never trust kids" Piniella managed to just use up his eligibility but not keep him in Seattle. Not that ARod needs a ROY on his sterling record, but dang, he'd have earned it.

Just plain stupid:

Ichiro won the 2001 AL ROY in a landslide, with 27 of 28 first-place votes and one second-place. One Cleveland area writer voted for Sabathia, claiming that Ichiro "didn't fulfill the spirit of being a rookie" -- and then cast Ichiro that second-place vote, instantly refuting his own rationale.

Sometimes a few of the writers don't do a very good vetting of their own thought processes.

How much would a Randy Johnson rookie card be worth after he retires?

I heard an announcer on tv yesterday say that lately Gold Gloves have gone to the better hitters at that position. I agreed when he said that just because you can hit doesn't mean you can field.

Will Clemens first game be at Fenway, June 1?

i think it is a popularity contest too. last year jeter had 15 errors at shortstop and alex gonzalez of the red sox at the time, only had 7. thats gotta say something about whoever votes for these things.

Who is the best relief pitcher ever?

sure

Has a pitcher ever had 2 outs in the 9th and allowed a hit to break up the no hitter?

Agreed. It should go to the guy with the best fielding pct at his position, with a certain amount of chances.

I hate when they give MVP or Cy Young awards to relief pitchers. They have their own award. In fact, MVP should go to a position player, not a pitcher. The pitcher has the CY Young award.

Why can't the Mariners make us Seattlites proud again?

I was under the impression that they decided on golden gloves based on fielding percentage. Which would make it reasonable, not just chosen by managers around the league. Which even though coaches can't vote for their own players, they vote for who they think is the most spectacular.

Why can't the Red Sox be stopped?

Yes, this is a ridiculous award, but it will get worse... I can't wait to see David Ortiz win the Gold Glove for the DH position!lol but seriously, someone said Mariano Rivera is not the best Yankee, he has blown three saves this year in the first couple of appearances. the best player on the red sox is Mariano Rivera!
