The DH can't be used for any player other than the pitcher . The use of the DH is optional. DH may not play a field position and he may only be replaced by another player not already in the lineup. However, he can change positions and become a positional player at any point in the game. However, if he does, the team forfeits the role of DH. Thus, the pitcher, other player, or pinch hitter must bat in the newly opened spot in the batting order. Some of you REALLY NEED to check out the official MLB Rules and LOOK under Rule 6.10(b), which states:
A hitter may be designated to bat for THE STARTING PITCHER and all subsequent PITCHERS in a game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) in the game. A DH for the pitcher must be selected prior to the game.
It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the PITCHER, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of the DH for that game, or in other words, if you don't use it for the PITCHER, you don't get to use it at all. So while a DH may hit anywhere in the lineup, he MUST bat for the pitcher ONLY.
If a pitcher is switched from the mound to a defensive position, this move shall terminate the DH role for the remainder of the game.

No, i Don't think it has to be the pitcher. Will the jays win wed. against detroit?
It does not have to be the pitcher. In fact occasionally you will see it used differently. You don't see it very much on the major league level but on the college level and below you see it quite often. The dh is only in the american league and he can be placed any where in the lineup.
Who is going to watch today tigers game on fox sport's net.?
doesn't have to be for the pitcher...you see it all the time in the majors but most of the time in college or high school the pitcher is a great hitter also. Why is it that major league baseball night games played in Canada start at 7:07pm?
Correct; the DH can hit anywhere in the lineup, and may replace any defensive player. If the pitcher hits well enough (e.g. Gary Peters in the 1960s), he can hold his own place in the lineup.I raise Peters as an example because he's the last one I recall who out-hit the batters he faced: higher batting average, on-base percentage, and better appearances per home run than he allowed from the mound.
I remember once, when Peters was still with the White Sox, he was bumped for a reliever with runners on the corners and one out. The manager (Al Lopez?) shoved Peters to 3rd base and removed the starting 3rd baseman. The batter put a nice bunt down the 3rd-base line. Peters fielded it bare-handed, turning in the "wrong" direction (lefty), which held the runner at third and let him nail the batter by a step. Lopez then put Peters back on the mound, brought in a utility player at third, and Peters struck out the next guy to end the inning.
anywhere in lineup, anyone
Who are the players throughout Stl Cardinals history which have worn number 30?
Im pretty sure that the DH has to hit. He is the designated hitter for the pitcher and i dont think that the pitcher can hit even if he wants to. Alot of people think that the DH should go away but i dont understand what the big deal with it is. The pitchers already have to pitch. Give them a break and dont make them hit too. What is your favorite MLB team??!?
DH CAN HIT FOR ANYONEWill the Red Sox still have the best record in MLB at the end on the season?
