What is rarer in baseball? Inside the park home run, or a balk?

It depends on what the pitcher's role is and how good their money pitches are. Starting pitchers will typically have 3 or 4 different pitches, but I have seen great pitchers have only two. I remember Dwight Gooden could only throw a fastball and curve but those two pitches were devastating. Quality is more important than quantity. Many pitchers can throw a variety of fastballs, like a two-seamer and a three-seamer (which supposedly moves more).

Relievers might only have one or two money pitches. Look at Mariano Rivera... Does he throw anything other than the cut fastball? Every batter expects it, but they can't hit it well. Left-handed batters get eaten alive by those cut fastballs. And how many lefty relievers are still playing because they can throw a sweeping curve or slider against left-handed batters?

Relief pitchers are typically relief pitchers because they haven't mastered more than two pitches. Starters have to have more variety because they face each batter up to three times a game while relievers usually only face each batter once a game.

Most pitchers can only throw a fastball and a curve, if they also have a change then they are good. Unless they are knuckle ball pitchers and those guys only throw the knuckler, and a so called 80 mph fastball.

Whats happening to the brewers?

Dice-K has eight pitches in his repertoire: a four-seam fastball that ranges from 90 to 96 mph (145–154 km/h) with some late movement, two-seam fastball, cut fastball, curveball, slider, splitter, shuuto, and a screwball-like changeup which is considered his best pitch; he can throw all eight pitches for strikes while using almost the exact same delivery. I would say that the average pitcher throws 3-4 pitches.

Rate my fantasy baseball team?

Starters, typically 3 or 4. Relievers (especially closers) can get away with 2.
Fastball, even if it isn't all that fast, a curveball and a slider are the norms. Forkball, a variation of the fastball, a 'slurve' are others.

If you are knuckleballer, that's all you need because it's not consistent anyway.

Best all-time "switch hitting" baseball team?

It depends on the role of the pitcher.

Most starters throw betwee 3 and 5 pitches.

Relievers typically work with 1-2, and some have 3.

Starters need more because they face the same hitters several times a game, while relievers typically only see a hitter once a game.

3 to 4. most pitchers throw a fastball, curveball/slider, and a changeup, but some also have a 2 seam fastball (when I said fastball I meant 4 seam fastball). Some like Dice-K throw 6, but that is a rarity. Some throw five cuz they throw a fastball, changeup, slider, curve, and a 2 seam, but many throw 3 to 4.

Who was the last St.Louis Cardinal to win NL MVP?

3 to 4 for the average pitcher.
A better than average pitcher should be able to throw 5-6 but if he can not control them they really are of no use. An excellent pitcher can have up to 8 different pitches.
Remember most pitchers do not have a change up pitch. It is not easy to master.

Most Starting pitchers throw 3-4 pitches (usually Fastball, Change, Slider, Curve or some variation of these pitches, some exceptions, such as wakefields knuckler).

Relievers typically only throw 2-3 pitches however. They are not in the game long, so they tend to concentrate and rely on these pitches.
