My little leaguer's timing (hitting) is way off. What can be done to fix this?
Question:He is just way too late on the harder throwers and simply way too early on the slower throwers...how can we find the happy median?
Are there any suggestions of what I can say or explain to him to fix this problem? Drills or words of wisdom? He makes contact, it is just weak contact.
It is not an issue of he is not good, because last year he played machine pitch, which threw the ball at 42 mph, and hit second in the lineup --hitting well over .700 for the season.
Now he just can't get the timing aspect down with the kids throwing the ball?

Batting cages are great for this problem, honestly.I imagine he probably still hits the slow cages, as he sounds young.
What you need to do, and this will be a challenge for him, is make him alternate between the slow cage, and the medium cage.
Once in slow, once in medium, once in slow, once in medium... back and forth.
Let him get used to seeing the ball, judging the speed and adjusting to it.
Regardless, that first year against live pitching is almost always a frustrating one for hitters.
He'll learn to adjust on his own with more practice and experience. The best thing you can do for him is just stay positive about it. Enforce the fact that EVERYBODY goes through it, even the major leaguers.
Tell him to look at the pros, and see how pitchers are able to fool them with changeups, and blow fastballs by them. And these guys are the best in the world! And they STILL don't have perfect timing.
The fact that you're agonizing over this with him tells me that you really support him at this, and that you're a good, involved parent. You guys will definitely get through this together, and he'll be back to hitting the ball with authority before you know it.
Will the mets sweep the yankees this weekend?
try hitting off of a tee just to start. the have him hit soft-toss into a screen (just toss tennis balls or something to him from the side). these will both improve hand-eye coordination as well as timing. make sure his back foot is planted and he is keeping his weight back. encourage going the other way with outside pitches and faster pitches. make sure he keeps his head in and eye on the ball. i think he will be alright, just keep practicing and it will come, everyone has slumps, success comes from repitition and him prevailing. good luck and dont give up!Should Roger Clemons go play for New York ?
I would not worry about it too much at this point. The only thing you can really do to fix this problem is pitch to him, and have him work on getting his weight and hands back and then just reacting to the ball. His body is use to waiting for that steady always constant 42 mph pitch that just is not coming anymore. It sounds like you are pretty involved so get out to the park and pitch to him, with league balls, whiffle balls whatever you have. Just make sure you are not just throwing but instead going through a natural pitching motion (change it up from time to time though) and also vary the speed at which you are pitching. There is no perfect solution, just keeping working with him and practice, practice, practice.Have you checked his vision?
practice soft toss and hitting off a tee.
soft toss is when the batter stands in his regualr batting stance towards a fence and another person is across of the batter and the person toss the ball to the middle and the batter hits the ball

It could be his mechanics. Try making sure his swing is short and to the point. If he has a long swing, he won't be able to catch up on faster pitches. A short swing looks kind of like chopping. Lemme find some websites for you to look at.Here:

There are also certain types of training bats that click at a certain point. If the clicking occurs before the bat reaches the front of the plate, you know you've taken a long swing. It should click exactly at the point of contact.
Here's an example of one bat:

Let me know if it is his mechanics though. O_o
Which chewing tobacco is the best to chew while playing baseball?
If he hit .700 in machine pitch, it sounds like his general mechanics are fine. If he's not getting enough power, make sure he's rotating his hips and his back knee is coming forward - that's where most of the power comes from. Soft toss would be good but I disagree with using a tee. It sounds like his problem is tracking the ball from a pitcher's delivery. For this reason I would pitch to him as much as possible or have friends/siblings his age pitch to him. It will come with time. Good luck.More Questions & Answers...
