Home runs and batting average are completely separate. But .289 is a solid average, and about 20 home runs is solid over the course of a season.Mike Schmidt probably the greatest 3rd baseman ever to play the game and a power hitter (548 career home runs) had a 267 average. so to answer your question a .289 is a great average for a power hitter.
