Rollie Fingers won the award in 1981, and Dennis Eckersley won in 1992. They both were responsible for the bulk of their team's wins. I don't see it happening again anytime soon. Only three relievers have ever won the MVP award.Rollie Fingers - 1981 AL
Willie Hernandez - 1984 AL
Dennis Eckersley - 1992 AL
I think the reason all of those guy won the award is that there was not a clear cut offensive player who should have won the award. When Eck won, he had an ERA of 1.91 and a WHIP of .913. Interestingly enough, two years later he had a 0.61 ERA and 0.61 WHIP but placed fifth in MVP voting.
I really do believe it comes down to how their competition did the year that they won.
I know that when Willie Hernandez won it, the Tigers had that start to the season in which they went something like 32-9 or something crazy. In addition, Willie converted EVERY Save attempt that year that he came into in a Save situation...
I can not speak to Fingers' season - as I was only 8 when he won his.
