In baseball, a pitcher may commit a number of illegal motions or actions which constitute a balk. If a balk occurs, the current play is allowed to continue. If each baserunner advances one base safely, the infraction is ignored. Otherwise, the balk is called "no pitch" and each runner is awarded one base (in contrast to a walk, in which runners only advance if forced). There are two motivations behind the balk rule. A pitcher is constrained to a certain set of motions prior to and during a pitch; if these are violated, a procedural balk will be called. Pitcher's actions that illegally deceive baserunners are called punitive balks.
A balk is when a pitcher comments an illegal action such as defacing the ball, delays the game on purpose, mimics part of his pitching motion while not on the rubber, and the most common stepping off the rubber without completing the pickoff attempt to 1st , 2nd, 3rd and many more reasons.

A balk is an illegal movement by the pitcher. It is mainly in place to protect the runner from being completely fooled in an unfair way. There are several illegal movements a pitcher can make. One example is: Say you are a runner on 1st and I am a left handed pitcher. If I stride completely towards home plate as if to make a pitch, but then throw over to first base, that is a balk.if a balk occurs baserunners if any advance to the next base. a pitcher can commit a balk many ways. the pitcher could move his shoulders while he is set or he could commit to the plate and pick a guy off. There are a few other ways but that is what most piitchers are called for
