Why are sportcasters calling home runs 'going yard'?

Question:I've just started hearing this lately. It's probably the worst grammatical mutation since 'my bad'.

This is baseball, not literature, and as with all professions has its own, evolving argot. There are probably more euphemisms for "hitting a home run" than for any two other aspects of the game. "Going yard" has been around for a long time.
