Relief pitchers often enter the game with men on base. So, they practice pitching from the stretch. And, rather than perfect two deliveries, they just work on pitching from the stretch, and do it all the time.Who has the strongest arm in the MLB... Rafael Furcal or Juan Uribe?
I don't believe they always work from the stretch. But usually they enter the game with men on base so are forced to work from the stretch position. You will notice more wind up relief when the play-offs start and closers are used more than just one inning. The stretch is easier, mechanically. The windup is more elaborate, with more chances for mechanical flaws. It's more of a timing-thing, where body parts get out of sync.
Most relievers work from the stretch, because they end up pitching from it more often than not anyway (with runners on), and it's easier to maintain from game to game.
