Why do Major League Baseball teams play opening day and then take the next day off?

A day is typically taken off in case there is a weather-related postponement and the game - hopefully - can be played the following day.Years ago, in old Municipal Stadium, Cleveland ended up not having an "official" opening day due to rainouts, snow and bad fog, management finally decided to cancel all of the ceremonies because three or games were cancelled.
That is an extreme example, but one that clubs must safeguard against due to the promotions surrounding the event.

The main reason is because they want to have a rain date for their opening day festivities. Other rainouts are just made into doubleheaders, but teams like to reserve a special date for opening day.
