It's made to help the 1B scoop balls in the dirt. I played for 15+ years, and I can tell you that it really was easier to scoop with that glove than a standard fielder's glove.So they can scoop bad throws in the dirt. That's why the webbing is bigger.

It is larger and designed to dig out throws from other players to make the out at first base. Other infield players have to both catch the ball and throw almost every time they come in contact with the ball.
