Don't listen to that uneducated person, whom stated that either sport is for "lazy ." Baseball is THE sport of the U.S. and while I was neither born, nor raised here, my son is a baseball player. The difference is the size and firmness of the ball and both sports are played by men, women and kids alike. Softball, as the name already says, is played with a softer ball then baseball and many of the rules are different also. That being said, all sports are good for your body and though baseball or softball is not considered a "contact sport", both are quite challenging. As a spectator during my son's practices and games, I find it very exciting. Have fun watching or playing. Just make sure that you or whomever has the proper equipment. The first thing to purchase is a protective cup for boys/men. Then the glove, the bat and any other equipment that is necessary. Playing ball is not cheap and you should make sure it's what you or the child really wants before you spend a fortune on it. Now go, play ball :) and don't worry, you'll catch on to the rules rather quickly. I did!MsB.apart that both of these sports are for lazy farts...

Other than the size of the ball and the bats, the strategies used to win the game are completely different. If you have ever seen a fast pitch softball game, most left handed batters run while they swing to get a head start to first base. You won't see a baseball player doing that. softball is pitched underhand..the ball is bigger..the bases are 60 ft. instead of 90 ft. apart.Softball is usually the girls version of baseball, but some out of shape older guys play it because its easier. There is only 60-70 feet between bases in softball (instead of 90). You throw underhanded to pitch (fast pitch uses a windmill pitch). And you have an extra outfielder (Right Center and Left Center) in softball. The Ball is bigger and a bit less dense (aka softball). also there is no professional softball league, although there should be for chicks who like to play.
