Question:a kid in my gym class today told me that the 3rd baseman was the captain of the infield. Now, I coulda sworn it was the shortstop in most cases. Brandon Inge is NOT the captian of the Tigers and A-Rod sure as heck aint the captain of the yankees. what do you have to say?

I think that the captain of the field before the play is the catcher. AFter the ball is hit, the shortstop or maybe even the pitcher sometimes is the captain of the infield. A third baseman can be a captain of the team but certainly not the infield since he is not involved in any other plays except when the ball is hit to his area.Why do METS AND RED SOCK FANS hate on the YANKEES payroll, when they are 2nd and 3rd?
There's really no captain at at any specific position in baseball. If you were going to pick a generic one, it would probably be the shortstop but it's arbitrary. In a lot of calls with involving the infield the catcher is the one who gives the signal.How come people at baseball games say...?
Position has no bearing on who is captain.If there is a pop fly in the infield, the third baseman is the one who is supposed to take control and usually designates who should catch the pop-up.
