Please explain the appeal of baseball?
Question:I know millions love the game and my son is a huge Atlanta Braves fan. But to me base ball is as boring as golf. Think about this, if a team has a great pitcher, the other team doesn't get any hits. 3 up and 3 down the entire game, how dull is that? I just can't get into it.

Baseball-is there such a thing as a delayed dead ball?
I could ask you the same thing about any sport you like. And if you don't like sports, I could ask you, "Why don't you like sports?" The appeal of a sport usually has to do with how you look at it. Fans of baseball will tell you that viewing a game with a great pitcher is great and exciting. Some think the pace is thrilling, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. And there are moments that are appealing to everyone, like the home run, a diving catch in the outfield, or those rare events like the grand slam or the perfect game.New york giants / yankees jobs?
well i honestly think whatever sport you dont understand is going to be boring. baseball especially... but once you have that team you root for and u understand the game the more you understand the intesity of the game. especially in the playoffs when every pitch counts... and watching on tv does no justice to actually watch it live. to me i love baseball and basketball.. but i rather watch baseball in personHow do coaches talk to pitchers on the mound when the pitcher doesn't speak english?
It is like a chess match. A great pitched game means every pitch has a purpose. The pitcher is trying to set up the batter and the batter is trying to out guess the pitcher. If you are just looking for a bunch of guys running around the bases, many games will be boring. But a great pitching duel that ends up as 1 - 0 is more exciting to me than a 10 - 5 score, because EVERY pitch becomes more important as the game wears on.Also, baseball doesn't have a time limit. It is over when it's over.
Do you think the triple AAA toledo mud hens will win their 3rd championship in a row? i do!?
To each their own. But a no-hitter / perfect game is better to watch than one that has runs in it.What is the average batting average for a MLB player?
I am not sure how to say this. If you think its boring you probably will never get into it. And thats fine. Why do I love it? There are so many reasons I am not sure yahoo has enough bandwidth available for me to list them all. But I will try to summerize:
1) There is the game itself. The chess match as someone else described it between the two managers, or even between the batter and the pitcher. (And yes the opposing team not getting any hits is of interest to me - watching someone pitching a great game is fascinating as I have learned how pitchers attack different hitters.)
2) There is the process of constructing a baseball team. Whether its scouting and signing players or even the new "Moneyball" way of building a team - that process has always been fascinating to me (and now that I have had the pleasure of seeing many minor league baseball games live - far more then any major league games - its even more fascinating to me.)
3) There is the literature of the game. Great writers like Frank Deford and Roger Angell writing on the history of the game, or even down to just the little slices of Americana that are baseball. (Angell was involved with THE NEW YORKER magazine as fiction editor, I believe, and wrote a number of great essays on baseball that were collected in many books. If you get a chance try paging thru one of his books the next time you visit your favorite bookstore - you might be pleasently surprised of the people that he runs across while he watches baseball on all levels.)
4) There is the history of the game. It goes back to the Civil War era (there is a great quote from Abraham Lincoln that is baseball related - I will see if I can find the exact quote) and goes thru the history of the US with some striking parallels.
5) And there is just the atmosphere of baseball - whether you go in person or watch it on tv (or even listen to it on the radio).
Like anything else - one persons boredom is another person's obsession (or at least pleasant distraction).
But baseball is America. Like Jazz (soemthing else I love). (not the mention the rest of that old Chevy commercial.)
What constitutes a non-save situation?
You sound like you don't want to get into the sport, but you seem like you want to find a way, maybe because you want to bond with your son. Me and my dad bonded while playing/watching baseball. If you want to enjoy the game maybe you should learn more about the players, and the way the game is played. When games are playing out to be pitching duels it is great because the matchups are so intense. If you like homeruns or big hitting slugefest games, then maybe you should pick a team that has a reputation for scoring big everygame. New fans to the sport are notorius for being Red Sox/Yankees fans. They have a slew of big time hitters, and i'm sure you won't get bored watching those games. Why is there such animosity between Yankees and Red Sox fans? Isn't it just a game?
Well, even the best pitchers have their off-days. And it's exciting to see your team beat an exalted pitcher! If you've never been to a major league stadium, please go, and you'll see for yourself! There's NOTHING like hearing the crack of the bat and watching that ball head towards the bleachers.that is, if it's one of your team's players :)
Maybe you'll never really love baseball; to each, his own, but to me there's nothing like it :)

Does Alex Rodriguez have a brother that plays for Detroit named Ivan Rodriguez?
I think one reason baseball has become one of the less liked sports in the US is because we have become too accustomed to the fast life. We as a country want everything fast or fast paced. In football and basketball they are constantly moving fast because they only have an hour to play. In baseball, you have more time to be more methodical.Like someone said earlier, baseball is like chess. It is more of a thinking mans sport. (I am not saying the other sports do not require thought, but they do not need as much.)
What's happening to the Twins!?!?
There is more strategy than in any other sport! The hit and run, run and hit, should the runner steal in certain situations, what pitch should the pitcher throw in a certain count! The strategies are endless! It is also the only sport I know of that is not run off of a clock! You have to at least get 27 outs in a game and have more runs. The game goes on until one team outscores the other!I am going to a Red Sox game in May where is a good place to go before the game.?
First off.the true appeal to baseball for me is in it's history. Baseball is so ingrained into 19th, 20th, and 21st century in America, that it is fascinating to see how baseball changed to fit the needs of the American economy. When America was going through the Civil War, baseball was in it's infaqncy, then it suffered through many of the things that America went through. Baseball has stood the test of time, and for many years was a pleasant distraction for Americans. That is the reason that Franklin Roosevelt personally asked the major league's not to dis-span for the duration of WWII. Baseball also struggled through civil rights, just as the rest of America did.As for the game itself. Once you have a good understanding of every detail of how a baseball game plays out, it can be quite fascinating. From the way managers juggle the lin-up, to the psychological games played between pitcher/batter, pitcher/baserunner, manager/manager. All of these things can be fascinating if you have the patience and interest for them. I guess overall, baseball is something you have to thouroughly understand to love. Much like Football. When watching football, it can be rather hard to follow, if you don't understand how it works.
