Clemens better then Ryan I think NOT!?
Question:Ryan is the most dominating pitcher of the last 40 years and maybe in the history of the game! The reason Ryan's record is only slightly above .500 is the fact that he played most of his career on bad teams! Clemens on the other hand has played for winning teams! Their lifetime ERA is only 0.08 different and the records that Ryan holds for no-hitters,1 hitters and career and season K's are pretty much untouchable! (Especially lifetime K's which will never be broken with the way pitchers are used in todays game!) Ryan never got to the world series which has to go down as the best player never to make it and that is not his fault remember baseball is a team sport and without a good team behind you you can't win no matter how well you pitch! Could you have imagined his career if he played with as many winning teams as Clemens?

First of all you're wrong about Ryan not getting to a world series. He was a member of the 1969 Mets. Your stats are not accurate. He was on a pretty good Angels team with a lot of run support. You need to do your research. Ryan was good but Clemens is much better. I'll take the rings and the Cy Youngs any day. As much as it pains me to answer this, as I am truly one of Ryan's biggest fans, Clemens is not only better, he's MUCH better than Nolan Ryan. Yes Ryan played on some bad teams, but not THAT bad. mainly he had horrific control until later in his career, and lost many games due to walking 6 or 7 batters in a game. The average ERA was much lower during most of Ryans career, so Clemens actually has a much better ERA in that regard. No-hit records are fairly meaningless when talking about the greatest pitchers of all time, and as far as strikeouts, Ryan is #1, but Clemens ain't too shabby himself. Regardless the number of strikeouts doesn't mean much in terms of who's the greatest. Otherwise Sam McDowell would be considered one of the greatest of the last 40 years. Ryan did in fact play in the 1969 world series (as a reliever). You could argue that Ryan caused the Astros to miss the 81 world series as he lost the deciding game giving up 3 runs in the 6th inning of that game. I don't have enough space to get into an in depth statistical analysis, but it's really not close: Clemens was/is better.Who will win the subway series this week end and why.?
You're not serious. ERA+ is 144 for Clemens (that means his lifetime earned-run average is 44 percent better than the rest of the league over the same period), 112 for Ryan (12 percent better). That's a big difference in Clemens' favor. In WHIP (walks + hits, divided by innings pitched), Clemens leads 1.170 to 1.247. Throw in the fact that Clemens pitched mostly in the five-man-rotation era and Ryan in the four-man rotation era, and think about what that does to each man's career stats, and Clemens looks more and more like the best pitcher of the post-1969 10-inch-mound era.In fact, I'm not sure Ryan doesn't also rank behind Steve Carlton, Randy Johnson, and, as much as it disgusts me to even think about him, Pedro Martinez. And Ryan was never, at his best, as good as contemporaries like Catfish Hunter, Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver or even Ron Guidry.
I'll have to go with Roger Clemens because he is consistent! No hitters & strikeouts don't win ball games but consitancey does that is why he has won several cy young awards on different teams. If you were to pick a pitcher at his best for a particular game there wouldn't be that much of a difference between the both of them except that Nolan would have more strikeouts and walks but the results would be the same. Nolan played for the Astro's and I don't recall them going to the playoffs as consistently as they did with Roger on the team plus it appears that his influence on the other players make the team that much better! Nolan Ryan was a great pitcher, I grew up watching him in Anaheim and on those magical nights when he was unhittable it truly was a thing of beauty. But Roger Clemens is one of the greatest pitchers of all time. During his career he was consistantly dominant, year after year start after start you can count on Roger Clemens to be a stud. With Ryan you took the good with the bad, he could be incredibly good but other times he wasn't. I am from Texas and a HUGE Nolan Ryan fan... But I would tell you there are a couple pitchers that have pitched from 1970 till now that had better careers then Ryan-Probably not as much fun to watch, but better careers all together. Clemens and Maddoux have by far better nubmers then Ryan. I know Ryan had more no hitters and more K's but those are not career defining. No hitters are great individual game performances and K's count just like any other out (I know no one advances on a K but not many DP's happen on a K either.).The good debates can happen with the next group of pitchers during that time period-Seaver, Carlton, R. Johnson, Pedro, and Sutton. Out of that group I think yu can, and I would make the arguement that Ryan is the best. AND being the 3rd best pitcher in the last 40 years is not a bad thing!

I'll go along with Ryan over Clemens any day. When it came to loyalty Ryan certainly wins that hands down. Ryan has the distinction of being a 20-game winner with a last place team. With Clemens' attitude I wonder if he would have stuck around and finished the season with a last place team?Steve Carlton was another one that took the good with the bad. Remember the 1972 season when Philadelphia won only 59 games and Carlton had 27 of them.
Clemens is a mercenary, the all self-appointed Savior of any team he will get to pay him what he wants. There's no team loyalty with Clemens. Witness the jump from the Red Sox to the Yankees. And he didn't get a lot of support from Houston, so he does what he's been doing, looking elsewhere.
Sure, he belongs in the Hall of Fame, no question about it. But I'd take Nolan Ryan long before I'd take Clemens.
Oh, and by the way. You are wrong on one account. Ryan appeared in the 1969 World Series. Ryan picked up a Save in his only trip to the mound pitching 2 1/3 innings, fanning 3 while giving up only one hit.

I think Clemens is better than Ryan, but I disagree about Ryans World Series record.Why wouldnt his appearance in 1969 count?I know he would disagree by showing you the WS ring he earned. Just because he hadnt achieved greatness is no reason to discount something he is probaly glad to have been a part. As for Clemens, I think he would have been just as great if he had played on the same teams Ryan did.
