Hank Aaron is wrong?
Question:I think I've lost a lot of "respect" for Hank Aaron. I've never seen him play and there is only one replay of his playing days ever shown so I have no idea what kind of person he is.
But his recent remarks that he won't be there to watch Barry Bonds break the record because "I traveled for 23 years, and I just get tired of traveling. I'm not going to fly to go see somebody hit a home run..." makes me question him as a person. Aren't records made to be broken? It's not just that he won't be there.its that he will "travel" somewhere else if Barry is in Atlanta with a chance to break the record.
...so he won't travel to see it but he'll travel to NOT see it?

There could be many reasons that Aaron is not attending, and you are focusing on one.Maybe he thinks that Bonds took steroids and doesn't want to look like he condones it.
Maybe he thinks he worked too hard as a man, a baseball player, and an African American to support a man that has not maintained his honor in any of these categories.
Maybe he thinks that this night is about Bonds, and he doesn't want to take the spotlight from Barry.
Maybe he doesn't want to follow Bonds across the country in the event that he is stuck at 755 for 10 games. Is he supposed to put his life on hold for this moment?
Maybe he doesn't believe that Barry took steroids, and doesn't want to have to represent the "clean" player, and have Bonds portrayed as the "cheater".
If he is staying away to protest the steroid allegations, he is doing it with dignity. He is not throwing Bonds under the bus and pointing fingers. It is the media trying to make a story out of Aaron's absence. They're making a story out of nothing. There have been many, many records set without the record-holder in attendance. Why does Aaron have to be there?

I expect racist Bonds to claim the race card (yet again) as to why Aaron and Selig are shunning the pariah.

Hank Aaron has his own right to choose whether or not to watch Bonds break the record. I believe he doesn't want to see it because of the whole steroids issue behind it, and he really doesn't want to have any part of it.And yes records are meant to be broken, but apparently this one is so sacred people do not want to see history. I don't think Aaron is wrong not to see it, while it would be respectful to Bonds, its not like he owes it to Bonds to see it.

He's not a young man, in case you didn't realize. It's his business if he feels that he can no longer tolerate the hassle of travelling. I wouldn't show up either! He's an old guy now, I wouldn't expect him to fly all the way out and chase Bonds around until he hits that homer (what if he goes on a little dry streak when he's 1 away). I wouldn't pay money to see a cheater break my record. That's asinine.Hank is a Class Act. All he said was that he wasn't going to be at the game. He didn't say that it was because he didn't like Bonds or that he thought Bonds cheated or that he was offended by Bonds many remarks suggesting that none of those older players can carry his jock. He just said he wouldn't be there.
Now, if any or all of those things that Hank didn't say are the reason why he won't be there, I wouldn't blame him a bit.
