How important is the Manager in Professional Baseball?

Question:The manager is always to blame when a team struggles. If he makes a decision (or fails to make a decision) and it backfires he's called stupid and people want him fired. If he makes the same decision and it works, then it goes unnoticed.

Example...
A pitcher has allowed 5 hits over 6 innings and 1 run in each the 1st and 3rd innings. He's retired 6 batters in a row. In the seventh inning the first two batters ground out and the next two single. The manager gets someone up in the pen and the pitching coach visits the mound. the next guy walks and the pitcher is yanked. the reliever gives up a double. the manager is criticized. what did he do wrong?

Answers:

The brewers game was delayed. Who won? Is it postponed?

The answer to your question is that the Manager can be worth 4 or 5 games a year either wins or losses. The important thing is not what happened in that situation you described but IF it worked out in his favor more or less over a 162 game schedule.

Does he pull his stud? If so the reliever needs to get the out or he'll be fried in the media but anyone that knows anything about baseball knows it will even out and if the manager has a good feel for his pitchers it will work out 5 or 6 times more then it will backfire over the course of a season.

Example: Bud Black is the new coach of the Padre's and he's pulled Maddux at various times this year already and the bullpen has gone on to LOSE 3 games they were leading in and they have a top 3 bullpen... By the end of the year it should balance out or the Pade's will have a new Manager...

SPRINTING/RUNNING question.?

That is life in the fast lane. Like it or not the manager is responsible for the performance of the team. If there is a problem with the team it's better to send one manager packing rather than the whole team.

What team would you love for you favorite team to sweep in the world series?

A manager knows their players better than anyone, they should know who will struggle in certain situations and who will step up and lead, thus the manager in the example should have decided who the besty player in that situation would be. The best managers arent always right, they just are right more than they are wrong.
