Question:When is it actually considered a save oppurtunity. I always see closers come in but I can never tell if they are going to get the save or not. What factors would make it a save oppurtunity?

What does a baseball manager really do?

The pitcher is the last pitcher in a game won by his team;

The pitcher is not the winning pitcher (for instance, if a starting pitcher throws a complete game win or, alternatively, if the pitcher gets a blown save and then his team scores a winning run while he is the pitcher of record, sometimes known as a "vulture win");

The pitcher fulfills at least one of the following three conditions:
1. He comes into the game with a lead of no more than three runs.
2. He comes into the game with the potential tying run being either on base, at bat, or on deck.
3. He pitches for at least three innings after entering the game with a lead.

If the pitcher surrenders the lead at any point, he cannot get a save, but he is the winning pitcher if his team comes back to win. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

If the team is winning before the closer comes in and the closer does not give up the lead, he gets the save.

Whats the record for most games in baseball played in one day?

A save is earned in 3 ways. Both times it is by the final pitcher in the game for the winning time. Either he comes into the game with a lead of no more than three runs, comes into the game with the potential tying run being either on base, at bat, or on deck, or he pitches for at least three innings after entering the game with a lead. The most common way is the first one, but three inning saves have been done by long relievers.

What do the SF giants need?

The factors are:
- The pitcher finishes the game.
- The pitcher enters the game with a 3-run lead or less, or the tying runner at bat or on deck.
- Once the pitcher enters the game, the lead is not lost. Ties also blow saves.
OR
- The pitcher finishes the game, and protects any lead for at least three innings.

However, whenever a pitcher enters the game with a 3-run lead or less, they can still get a blown save. If they did not relinquish the lead, they will get a hold.
