What is the ESPN radio station that will have the Detroit tigers vs. Twins?
1.) Dirty and scuffed balls react differently than a fresh ball. This gives an advantage to the pitcher.2.) A dirty ball is harder to see, and this harder for a batter to get out of the way of. Ray Chapman of the Indians was killed in 1920 after being beaned in the head by a ball he couldn't clearly see because it was dirty (this was several years before batting helmets.)
Anyone who says it is because pitchers can't grip a dirty ball is wrong. Pitchers love it when they can get their hands on a dirty or scuffed ball, because it gives them extra movement on breaking pitches.

Did anyone hear Curt Schilling's sour grapes after Clemens joined the Yankees?
You're suppossed to get a new ball when the ball hits any dirt or any surface that may scratch the ball because they don't want any scratches to affect the flight of the ball and give the pitcher "unnatural" movement.Anyone going to the Cubs opener tomorrow? Excited as me?
Because a dirty ball is harder to control. You cant predict where it goes. On the other hand, sand grit or tar helps a pitcher a lot when they are applied on the right spots on the ball. But yeah I agree they should use the same ball over and over. It will save some money and help cut down fans ticket prices and ever rising cable costs.
Am I the only Blue Jays fan on YA?
Major League Baseball likes every pitch to be with a brand new ball, for many reasons, 2 of which are no pitcher advantage with scuffed or dirty balls, and better vision of the ball for the batter and fans.If the catcher doesn't ask the ump for a new ball, the ump will tap him on the back of the shoulder and hand him one, so it's really just a habit for the catcher to ask for one more than anything.
Is pitching with sunglasses on safe?
If there is dirt on the ball the pitcher can get a better grip on the ball and that can create better spin on the ball which will give the pitcher and unfair advantage. It is almost like Stick'umid answer this but most everyone pretty much got it right. but throwing a 95 mph ball in the dirt can mess up the stitching, which will affect the movement and gripping of a future pitch
I heard some people say Ortiz is only goo cause Manny hits behind him?
becuase balls have to be clean. In the deadball era pitchers would scuff up the ball to put additional movement. Now for safety reasons, those pitches are banned. The umps must ask for a clean ball. Also it is very hard to hit when balls are scuffed and dirty. What is the major league baseball curfew?
Because it gets dirty and is harder to control when the dry dirt goes on it and you do't want to mess the surface of the ball up either. Will the marlins end the 2007 season over 500.?
once it gets in the dirt an is wet from pitchers sweat it hard for him to grip an keep control of his pitchesI need to train for softball!?
They have to do it. Any ball that has been put in play of hits the dirt must be taken out of play. Its for the benefit of the hitters because if the ball has a foreign substance on it, it doesn't move in the same way it normally would. This is similar to a pitcher applying applying vasoline or some other substance to throw a spitball.athletes r very superstitious, they thnk it'll affect ther grip n delivery on the ball
when it gets thrown in the dirt it gets a mark on it and it makes it easier for the batter to pick up on the spin of the next pitch, so he would be able to tell what kind of pitch it is.
Has Kyle Farnsworth earned the right to mouth off about Roger Clemens based on his performance?
Do you like a clean plate when you eat? A pitcher likes a clean ball when he throws his arm to pitch. His arm is invaluable and wants to use it wisely. Dirt certainly would interfer with that process and it is an expensive game.I am going to the yankee game tonite?
