It's really difficult to keep the runner on 1st from getting 2nd base. What we always did was fake out the runners by having the catcher pretend to throw to second, but really throws it to the shortstop. The runner on 3rd thinks the catcher is throwing down to 2nd, and usually tries to steal home, but then the shortstop really has the ball and can usually throw it home, forcing the runner into a pickle. Play it correctly, and you can get the runner out at home, as well as the runner who is on 2nd, but most likely trying to steal 3rd as well. :o)Sorry if that was confusing. :o)
Usually you will have your shortstop cover second and your second baseman will cut behind the pitcher (between the pitcher and second base). Once the players are in position, the catcher throws down and it is up to the second baseman's discretion whether or not to cut the ball. If the second baseman believes that she can get the runner at third, whether by throwing home or by throwing to third, then she should do that. If she sees that the runner stays on third, she can let the ball go through to second to get the runner stealing. In addition, if your second baseman cuts the ball and the runner on third does not break for home, she can always toss the ball behind her to second and still get the out.
One more way is to have your catcher throw a pick to third right away instead of to second at all, that way you are trying to double up the runner on third for the out.
Most likely the goal of this play is to not give up a run by keeping the runner on third or getting an out at third and the runner from first usually always gets to second.

Oh great question we call it gold. Have your 2nd basemanget about right in between pitcher's nound and the bag. Let the catcher throw to your 2nd b-man. If the runner on 3 goes throw it straight back to your catcher. If there are 2 outs then go straight to 2 and get the 3rd out.More Questions & Answers...
