The Yanks have just about the best bullpen & the best hitting lineup in baseball. They started Pavano yesterday (their 5th starter) and still won. When Mussina, Wang, Pettitte, etc. will keep them close and this team will win the AL East again. They've been in the playoffs for ELEVEN SEASONS in a row -- and are better than last year.

I'd love to hear your sources, because every year people say that the Yankees are going to be terrible. It's mostly coming from Boston fans, hoping to re-live their fluke year of 2004. I'll agree, they have a mediocre at best pitching staff. But top to bottom, they have no holes in their lineup. They will be able to outscore teams. That may not be enough come playoff time, but they will win the A.L. East. But maybe your right, if they don't win the Series, they will be considered terrible. Unlike other teams, they aren't just happy to get there.Anyone else like when Manny Ramirez stands after he hits a HR?

Pitching is the reason. More specifically... Starting Pitching. But they have one of the most potent offenses in the league which will carry them through, IMHO. I would lump The Mets and The Yankees in the same category in this regard. Don't be suprised to see either team make it to the playoffs... How far they advance from there will be anyone's guess. One other thing to consider... both teams have HUGE WALLETS. It ain't over till it's over...Baseball sweatbands with numbers?

Im a huge Yankees fan, probably one of teh biggest ing the world, and im not saying this just becasue i am. I thinnk that people saying that are Yankee haters or idiots. I'll admit there pitching in the bullpen in horrible besides for Mariano. I don't think they'll be terrible, but the competition in their division has heated up.Their offense should be great, again.
The question, again, is their starting pitching. They'll be relying on two guys who have had physical problems in recent years (Pavano and Pettitte) one guy who can be brilliant but falters in big games (Mussina) another untested Japanese player and Wang who has been such a total surprise that I keep waiting to see if he turns back into a pumpkin some midnight.
And their defense is shaky. Cano is still getting his legs at second, Jeter is streaky, Arod can have meltdowns at third, Matsui is the LF everybody loves to run on and Damon is getting old for a centerfielder.
No one is predicting the Yankees to be terrible. They just don't have a pitching rotation that is comparable to their lineup of Nine All-stars. The Yankees will still, barring a miracle, win the East, but I have to say, the Yankees are not number one by any stretch of the imagination. They haven't won a world series in almost a decade now, and I would think at least one ring in six years would be necessary to be called number one. That is unless you're talking about payroll, they are certainly number one in that. Anyway, the point is... Go Orioles!!!

They're good, but it seems every year, the East gets stronger. Some of their best players are past their prime, their pitching is led by Chien Ming Wang, who probably doesn't deserve to be an #1, and some of their players are injury prone, like Matsui.
