It's significant because Shilling had just had an ankle surgury and had pins in his ankle. One of the pins came lose, and caused him to bleed from his ankle, hence the bloody sock. It's a big deal because it symbolizes the self sacrifice and personal willpower to attain the goal of winning a world series. its not, when he pitched before that wonderful game in 2004, he had just recieved a cortisone shot for his aching ankle, it is actually an icon that brings joyous memories to sox fans!!They are trying to say that he faked the blood for dramatic effect. Because of the publicity of him pitching against the Yankees even though he was bleeding. If it was some other subtance then this would be another "legend" that was fake. He stayed in the game and pitched even though he had tore his ankle by pitching so hard.Because when he was in his early 20`s he was in a hotel & some crazy female fan shot him in the ankle, sidelining his career for 17 years. At the ripe old age of 38 he made a comeback & became the best player in the game. Then in the biggest game of the year, the old wound opened up & started bleeding... this would make a great movie !
