It is faster for the ball to get there on a line then to put some air under it and try to make the ball go all the way in the air. The tough part is making it bounce so that the first baseman can catch it without trouble.This is the correct answer. In short, it depends on the playing surface. On grass/dirt, it isn't any faster necessarily. and certainly isn't worth the increased risk of having the 1st baseman miss the catch.
