What constitues a "hold" in baseball?
Question:what is it, and who has the most, career and recent single seasons
Answers:
What is the highest average by a player by end of the season?
A hold is an "unofficial" stat since there is no mention of it in the official major league rulebook, but the definition of a hold is a relief pitcher enters a game in a save situation, records at least one out and leaves the game never having relinquished the lead. A pitcher cannot finish the game and receive credit for a hold, nor can he earn a hold and a save in the same game. The all time leaders in holds as of today are Mike Remlinger and Arthur Rhodes who have 140. They are both still active so that could change today.
The single season leaders are Scott Linebrink of 2006 San Diego Padres and Tom Gordon of the 2004 New York Yankees who each had 36 holds.

i think they just started recording this stat recently. as far as i know, it is similar to a save, only not to end the game. if a relief pitcher comes in the game with his team leading and leaves with lead still, then it is a hold. they usually monitor this stat for the set-up, 7th-8th inning guys. What are all of the accomplishments Barry Bonds has achieved in his baseball career?

The "Hold" became a stat just a few years ago. It goes to the relief pitcher that leaves the game while his team is ahead and his relief pitcher comes on to maintain the lead for the "Save'.More Questions & Answers...
