Eight teams advance to the postseason.The six division champions, and the second-place team with the best record per league, occupy the eight berths. Various tie-breaking methods exist if needed, some requiring additional games played. (There has not yet been more than two teams tied that required a game tiebreaker.) In the event that a tie needs to be broken only to determine seeding, and not if a team will go or stay home, non-play methods are used (head-to-head record, that sort of thing).
The three division champs per league are seeded 1-2-3 by overall record. The wild card gets the 4 seed no matter what.
In the Division Series (best 3-of-5), #4 plays #1 and #3 plays #2 -- higher seed gets homefield advantage (games 1, 2, and 5) UNLESS the wild card is from the same division as the #1. In that case, the matchups are 1-3 and 2-4.
Division Series winners advance to the League Championship Series (best 4-of-7). Higher seed again gets homefield advantage (games 1, 2, 6, 7).
LCS winners advance to the World Series as league champions. Homefield (games 1, 2, 6, 7 again) is determined by which league won the All-Star Game earlier in the season (not a very good method, but there it is).
Winner is the season champion.
