Question:There was much more evidence against Mark McGuire that he had taken Steroids, in fact I am unsure if Barry Bonds has ever failed a drug test in his career. But McGuire is revered as a legend and Barry Bonds is portrayed as a villian.
Do you think the public unfairly applies a double standard to Barry Bonds based on his race? Do you think it might be something else?
For the record I am not a huge baseball fan, I am just curious as to why there seems to be a double-standard when talking about the alleged steroid use of Barry Bonds Vs. the alleged steroid use of players like, for example, Mark McGuire or Curt Shilling.

I'm not sure what you base your statement of, "There was much more evidence against Mark McGwire that he had taken steroids..". There has never been any such evidence. McGwire got unjustifiably persecuted for not giving in to what was clearly nothing more than a witch hunt and gold digging expedition by congress. They invited him and the others to talk about the steroid issue in baseball and then proceeded to interrogate all of them. It was a travesty. I will admit his response was lame and could have been better spoken, because it did create doubt in people's minds. However, he didn't go there under the premise of being aware he was going to be interrogated personally.As for the Bonds issue, yes, I believe the guy is getting the shaft. While there seems to be a good chance he did use performace enhancing drugs, there is not yet proof. The issue is simply one of Barry's own creation dating back to his days in Pittsburgh. He became an enemy to the media, and now they get to have their revenge on him. He will be persecuted in the media every chance there is. I believe it has ZERO to do with the fact that he is African-American. It's because of his past treatment to those in the media, and the fact that he is the only one ever to actually approach a record that most thought would likely never be approached.
How come nobody brings up Brady Anderson's 50 Hr season anymore? How come no one questions why Griffey Jr. is constantly injured, starting even before he got old? No one ever brings up the name of ANY pitchers. In that sense, it is clear that Bonds is treated very unfairly on the issue. Some of which as I stated, is his own bed he made.

There is NOTHING to do with race here. The reason that most don't like Barry is that he is a jerk to his fans and teammates! Add to that the steroids and you should see why.Plus, McGuire did not have any evidence against him. He did admit using the "andro" but that's all.

Only recently has it become such a huge issue. When McGwire & Sosa battled to top Maris' record, they were loved. I've been a fan since I was a kid growing up in the 80s. My views on the subject have never changed, I love baseball. I assumed(like most people should've) that many players took steroids. I guess there's lots of fans out there who lied to themselves about the entire steroids issue, and now they hate those involved. So they go after the huge name that's left, who is, coincidentally, going after the biggest record of them all. If that's not the case, then they're just sheep, being led to hate steroids by the press. In either case, yes it's a double standard, maybe not so much about race, but about gullible fans. No one cared in the 80s and 90s, but now suddenly they do. I'm sure there are those rare cases of racists who hate Bonds, but maybe they use the steroids issue to hide their racism. Of course your not a huge baseball fan, cause you have the McGwire thing all wrong. The only thing that McGwire has been found with was a natural, legal susbstance in his locker that has been banned by other sports because of its similarities to steroids.Bonds admitted he took them, but then tried to play the dumb card. Then said he was going to retire at end of last year because the game was not fun anymore. He did not like playing anymore, yet he is still out chasing the record.

Barry Bonds is hated more because he is the best player in baseball, period. The way i see it is that every team has guys on steroids the mets, the giants, the yankees, the pirates, everyone. The difference is the Giants have the best guy on steroids so thats why there is so much pressure on him not because hes black its just that he and his numbers stand out. Also the press hates him because he plays games with by telling lies as jokes and he doesnt give interviews a lot.And he only failed one drug test his whole career and it was for amphetamines not for steroids. And by the way there have been hundreds of players who were caught using them, they were used in the 60's.

Yes. McGwire was obviously juiced, and eventually admitted to taking Andro, although we all know there was even more to it than that. He was a big jerk, too.But Barry is black, and most sports writers don't like him, so they want everyone to hate him, just because he doesn't always take time out for them. Barry has never tested positive, and the drugs he might have taken were not banned by basebal at the time he allegedly took them.
Correction: McGwire was treated like a legend, since more info came out and he pleaded the fifth in front of Congress (which Bonds failed to show up) people have no longer given him the benefit of the doubt either. Both have these players have disgraced the game and should have asterisks in the record books.

i don't believe that there is a double standard at all..i think what they are doing to mark mcguire is wrong and he should be left alone..he left the game before steroids were illegal...he admitted to using a legal substance...and he's a huge part of the reason baseball is as big as it is again. Mark McGwire is the only member of the 500 Home Run club who's eligible for the hall of fame... but not in it.He's the first guy with over 500 homers EVER to not get inducted on the first ballot.
The voters hammered McGwire to the wall. And so has the general public.
The difference is that Mark McGwire was a nice guy for his entire career. People liked him before.
Bond was an a$$hole BEFORE he became known as a steroid cheater. So now that's twice as many reasons to hate him. He's the easiest target in sports history.

Barry Bonds started off in Pittsburgh as a skinny a-hole, and has become a gigantic a-hole almost overnight. He showed up to spring training a few years back and was almost 40 pounds heavier. You could live at CiCi's Pizza in the off-season and your not gonna naturally gain 40 pounds of muscle in 5 months!
Bonds has admitted he "might" have used it but thought it was a cream. So if I handed you a dog terd and told you to rub it in your skin I guess you would do that too without asking any questions huh? As far as McGwire is concerned. What everyone seems to forget is that he took Andro which WAS NOT a banned substance during his playing days. Andro was not "cheating the game" as it was legal to take. He has NEVER been proven to have taken anything illegal or against the leagues substance abuse policy. Nor did he suddenly explode in size.
