Question:I need to break in a ton of baseballs. They are all new and slick, and I need them to be "unslick." I know the pro's use mud, is there a "recipe" for good mud, or any other ways of breaking in the baseball.

A question about Roger Clemens.?

No ball can go into play in an MLB game without being rubbed by Lena Blackburne mud. The first link is an article on the subject. According to the article, the mud comes from one farm in NJ. The Army Corps of engineers did a study and found a higher level of feldspar, which the article says is fine enough to remove the gloss without scratching the leather.

The second link is to the official site. I've never seen it in a store, but I've never looked either. It's actually not that expensive, although it's not dirt cheap. Sorry, the pun was too easy to pass up.

Basically, you want to rub off any gloss, without scratching the leather. I'd consider buffing it by hand with a dish towel perhaps? This may not work because of the number of balls, but playing catch works too. If you have access to a pitching machine, run them through there a few times. This is likely to mar the leather a little bit, but hopefully not too much.
