I dont know either but, I guess it keeps them busy..lol..I chew gum all the time while I am working and I dont know why...As for the spitting, thats just plain gross..lol...

It feels good, that's why. Also, some of them aren't chewing gum--that's tobacco they're working over in their mouths. Fortunately, this diseased practice is on the decline.Also, you can get a lot of dirt and grit in your mouth playing ball, and spitting it out is better than swallowing it.
Spitting is O.K. It's the scratching and cup adjusting I can do without having to see anymore.
