What do you think of Tiger Stadium in Detroit? Should it be torn down? Is Illitch ripping off the taxpayers?
Question:
Answers:
In 1967, who finished second to Carl Yastrzemski for the Red Sox team lead with 20 home runs?
No taxpayer funding should be used for building new stadiums these Sprts Franchises make billions they can afford to build their own stuff !Actually Illitch doesn't own the stadium, the city does.
The problem with tearing it down is that its site isn't in the best area of Detroit to begin with. The value of that land is pretty low without the stadium. Its really value is historical and the only real thing that would attract developers is its historical value. So they should definitely preserve the playing field and try to ensure that it is regularly used (professional baseball has been played there since the late 1800s) and build a museum there to capitalize on the historical value.
As for the rest of the stadium it is kind of a dump, but you need to have something to replace it before you tear it down. I haven't heard that the city has found a developer yet. They seem dead set on a yet to materialize plan to build condos and have turned all other proposals down. They want to tear it down and then assume a developer will magically appear. Kind of the reverse of "if you build it they will come" Considering that it isn't in the most attractive of areas, that may be a foolish way of going about things.
