Quick question regarding lineup protection?
The Umpire's Handbook by Ed Brinkman is a good start. Heis a recently retired MLB umpire, and at one time operated a professional umpire school.
Baseball's Knotty Problems, published by The Sporting News, is an outstanding reference for strange situations and odd happenings.
Make The Right Call, published by MLB, is another good rule reference.
All three of these books may be found used and at a good price on Amazon.
Also, I believe that "Little League Baseball, Inc. " publishes a
handbook for umpires.

The leagues rulebook should be the only book you follow. When I used to umpire little league, they did classes every spring for the umpires. New umpires were required to go and veterans could go if they wanted. The guys that have been around for a while can teach you more than any book.

What is the most years in a row that a MLB team has been below .500?
Officiating any game in any sport is about far more than just knowing the rules. You need to attend an umpire school. My recommendation would be (1) a rules book and (2) a mechanics manual. Also it may behoove you to locate a local umpires camp being taught by top flight college or professional umpires. Usually they are run in the winter in the south and cost about $275 or so for the weekend but the instruction is great.
Maybe try to pick the brains of the minor league or big league guys when they come to your area. Contact the nearest league for more information.
