In slow-pitch softball, there is generally a height requirement in which a pitched ball has to satisfy. Most leagues I played in required a pitch to be at least 6 feet high, but no more than 12 feet. This number, however, varies from league to league.To achieve this height, but keep the ball in the strike zone, then you must throw the ball really slow, thus making it "slow pitch" softball.

its the pitching styles. slowpitch is an underhand pitch with an arc usually 6-12 feet or 6-10 feet. this depends on if you are asa or usssa team. there is an extra outfielder too making 4.for fastpitch the pitcher does a "circle" pitch meaning she moves her arm in a circular motion before releasing the ball, this causes more momentum making softballs faster. they have one less outfielder than softball making it 3 just like baseball, they also have signs just like baseball.
as for hitting the ball in either slow pitch or fast pitch you must get on top or the middle of the ball for it to go anywheres, if you get under it or on the lower portion of it like you would a baseball all you will do is pop up causing an easy out
