Can't see how one can lose a game without giving up at least one run (except by forfeit, which is rarer than a no-hitter).

The 1964 Houston Colt .45's Ken Johnson threw a complete game no hitter and lost against the Cincinnati Reds. As the ninth began Johnson got Joe Nuxhall to ground to third for the first out. That brought up Pete Rose, who bunted. Johnson fielded the bunt and made a wild throw over the first basemens head, allowing Rose to take second on an error. Chico Ruiz followed with a hit that richoceted off Johnson's shin to third baseman Bob Aspromonte, who threw Ruiz out at first for the second out allowing Rose to take third. Next, center fielder Vada Pinson hit a routine grounder to Nellie Fox, but Fox bobbled the grounder and his throw to first was late which enturn allowed Rose to score the winning run. Has to be one of the worst feelings that you could have in a baseball game.

Just Ken Johnson.

A pitcher must throw every pitch of the game for his team, for 9 or more innings, without allowing a hit to be credited with a no-hitter. Anything else is listed as an extraordinary effort, but NOT a no-no.

Any combination of walks, hit batsmen, errors, sac flies and sac bunts can push a runner across the plate without the benefit of a hit in the inning.

See the link below for a complete list of no-hitters, combined no-hitters and extraordinary efforts. You'll also see that most, not all but most, no-hitters are also shut-outs.

On April 12th, 1992 Matt Young of the Red Sox lost to the Indians 2-1 despite throwing 8 no hit innings. Since the game was in Cleveland they did not bat the ninth.
