What is rarer in baseball? Inside the park home run, or a balk?
Question:Two extreme rarities...does anybody have evidence of which is rarer?

Whose versatile athlete's nickname was inspired by her mighty baseball swing ?
According to Major League Baseball stats for 2006, there were 140 balks over the season.According to baseball-almanac.com, only one in every 158 (or 0.63%) of home runs were inside the park between 1951 and 2000.
If we assume that that percentage is still accurate (which it will not be due to the decreased size of major league ballparks between 1951 and today, but it will still illustrate the point) then out of the 5386 home runs in 2006, only 33 would have been inside the park. As expected, this number is high, as the most detailed list I could find for the 06 season only listed 22.
This is only true for the professional level. Having attended and worked at many a little league game I have seen many more inside the park home runs than balks. Most umpires on that level are forgiving enough to over look the small movements that would constitute a balk on the major league level.
Hope this helps.
That's tough, but I would say balk.
Why do baseball players stick their index finger outside the glove?
I will say balk because I've never heard of it.With the sale of the Atlanta Braves will the games still be aired on TBS?
a balk would probably be the rarest of both, there are a lot of inside park homeruns, and some are from errors. to my understanding though the pitcher is the one that balks and some of them are allowed depends on if anyone is on base or not. not sure if this is the right information, but remember my sister in law talkin bout it at one of her softball games, seems that mens softball and womens softball are allowed to balk even if there is noone on base, and they can also pitch a quick return pitch unlike baseball.Who do you think will be in the all-stars this year that is on the mets team?
To me, an inside the parker is more rarer. Both seldom occur in a major league baseball game. A balk can be easily made mostly due to the pitcher's movement whereas an inside the park home run is more difficult to obtain.Nevertheless, a inside the park home run is much more exciting to watch instead of a balk. I would rather watch a inside the parker than a balk. After all, a balk can be made by breaking several confusing rules.
Will the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007 ?
The inside-the-ballpark-homerun occurs less often than a balk--There were around 25 ITB hrs last year and around 50 balks in the Majors. I wouldn't classify them "rare" as say, a triple play, which occurs maybe 2-3 times a season in both leagues.More rare would go to inside the park homerun. Not alot of guys have speed and can't make it around the bases that quick, and not to mention the outfielders are quicker. A balk is more common now.
