Is the Orioles trade of John Maine (5 w 1.79 ERA) to the Mets for Kris Benson the dumbest trade in recent yrs?
Question:
Answers:
Remember Benson did win 11 games for the Orioles last year so at the time it was considered a good trade as the O's were trying to dump Julio and the Mets at the time were trying to stabalize their bullpen and add depth to the organization.
What range of height do you need to be for baseball?
I am not sure the O's knew what they had in Maine, and they finally got rid of Julio in the deal. Frankly, the Mets' trade of Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano was worse.Who was the major league pitcher who had been an ice hockey goalie?
Trades are evaluated over a number of years, not the first 5 weeks of any given season.I don't think so. Benson is a good pitcher who got hurt. Happens to a lot of players. I look for him to bounce back next year and have a good season, especially if the O's can get some runs for him which they didn't do last year. Maine is young yet and so is the season. Ask this question again in about five years.
This trade is nowhere as stupid as the 1991 trade when the Orioles traded Pete Harnish, Curt Schilling and Steve Finley to the Astros for Glenn Davis. Now THAT was dumb!
so far it looks like it but Maine could collapse soon and Beson might be a 20 game winner in the years to come
Pre Game pump up songs? anyone have any?
The Orioles just wanted to see if it was really true about Anna Benson. Why did those great washington nats beat the mets?and more is coming?
No John Maine was a great steal for the mets but it was not Maine who the mets needed. That year they had a lot of starting pitching (Pedro, Traschel, Glavine, Seo, Ishii, and a bunch of minor leagers.) and needed relief pitching. They intended for a Benson-Julio Trade And threw in Maine so they can ensure a trade. Plus Kris Benson was a very productive pitcher for the Mets. Its too bad he got hurt. AND the worst trade EVER was kazmir for Zambrano so no, Maine and Julio for Benson was not a bad tradeHow to Display a Baseball Program?
Maine will be solid for a while while Benson has never been that good and never will be.well u cant blame the orioles. i dont think that the orioles knew that john maine was that good.besides the mets really needed to get rid of chris benson and his on and off the field issues.
What is the best kind of softball/baseball glove?
I'm not sure what you mean by recent years..but in my mind this is far from the worst. The Expos a few years ago gave up Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee for Bartolo Colon. They then promptly traded Colon a month later when they fell out of the race. That my friends is a horrible trade. No, I still think the Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano trade will be a disaster for the Mets, if it isn't already. Maine is off to a great start, but you don't know how he is going to finish. He will slow down eventually, he can't keep up that pace. As for Zambrano, he is long gone, while Kazmir is still only 23 and getting better. Tough to hit, even when he loses.
Who is the "BEST Lead off Hitter" in Major League Baseball History?
I can give you two trades by the Pirates that were even dumber.2003: Pirates trade 3B Aramis Ramirez and OF Kenny Lofton to the Cubs for 2B Bobby Hill, 3B Jose Hernandez, and minor leaguer Matt Bruback. This is the ones that the masses can't forgive. Faced with not making payroll (or so the story goes), the Pirates HAD to make a move in the summer of 2003. With Kris Benson injured and unable to be traded, the Pirates dumped their 3B of the future (along with Lofton, a veteran still capable of contributing) in exchange for three players. Hill had one season (2004) as the main starter at 2B for the Pirates but was released in 2005 and has not surfaced in the major leagues since. Hernandez, who once fanned 188 times with the Brewers, was brought in for Ramirez. He hit .223 over the remaining months, and was released on October 1, 2003. Like a phoenix, he rose again, this time with the 2006 Pirates, contributing a .177 batting average to the Buccos. Ramirez is a perennial All-Star candidate.
2001: Pirates trade P Jason Schmidt traded to the Giants (with OF John Vander wal) for P Ryan Vogelsong and OF Armando Rios. Schmidt would blossom into one of the majors' finest starters, finishing as runner up for the 2003 NL Cy Young with a 2.34 ERA and 17-5 record. He is still recognized as one of the league's dominant hurlers. Vander wal was a part-time starter for the Pirates who whacked 35 HR over two seasons with the black and gold. Vogelsong, who was supposedly a dominant pitcher in the making, had become the go-to "mop up man" for the Pirates, often referred to as "The White Flag". His career line: 10-22, 5.86 ERA. Rios had all of three at-bats with the Pirates before an injury. He responded with a mediocre 76 game run in 2002, was released after the season, and appeared in only 49 more MLB games.
And as for the Maine/Julio for Benson trade, I wouldn't really consider it a dumb trade. The O's were looking for a veteran presense that gave them credibility in their starting rotation. Benson, then being 57-61 with a 4.15 ERA in 165 starts along with his potential of being a No.1 starter, gave them that credibility. The Orioles have been trying for two seasons to add a veteran starting pitcher to the rotation, and vice president Jim Duquette said Baltimore targeted Benson soon after the 2005 season ended. He was a great addition to their pitching staff, despite going 11-12 with a 4.82 ERA in his first season with the O's. He now, unfortunately, is injured again, but that could happen to anyone.
So far it looks like the Mets made out well in the deal despite Julio only appearing in 18 games and pitching 21.1 innings (1-2, 5.06 ERA) for the Mets in 2006, but he then was traded to the D'Backs for Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez in late May, who went 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA for the Mets. El Duque is 2-1 with a 2.53 ERA this year. Maine went 6-5 last year with a 3.60 ERA and this year he is 5-0 with a 1.79 ERA.
So if you add up the wins and losses, the Orioles ended up with an 11-12 record with Benson in 2006. He is now recovering from a shoulder injury and has yet to pitch this year. The Mets, after acquiring Maine and Hernandez (by trading Julio) in 2006, has had a combined 22-13 record. That is twice the amount of wins and just about the same amount of losses. However, those numbers only reflect the decisions of those individual pitchers, not the outcomes of each game started by each pitcher. But a pitcher's record is usually a good indication of how well they're doing.
So is this the dumbest trade in recent years? No. I still think those two trades by the Pirates are far worse, although I must say that I was quite surprised that the Orioles gave up Maine in a trade for Benson. The Orioles knew what they had in Maine as he was regarded as a top prospect in the O's farm system over the past couple of years.
Right now the Mets have enjoyed greater success on the immediate impact of the trade, but in order to call this a dumb trade, you're going to have to wait a few years and look at the long term effects. Benson is still a good pitcher who unfortunately currently happens to be on the 60-day DL. As far as we know, Kris could come back and become a Cy Young candidate year in and year out while the beginning of the 2007 season could be the brightest spot in Maine's entire career.
