No one is against gambling, but when you are a manager and you are betting on your team to win or lose, that is just wrong especially after the Black Sox scandal, baseball can not have such things like that take place, it will ruin the game. The rules were in place and Pete Rose messed up, to bad because he belongs in the Hall and will never get there until he is dead most likely.Ever notice that the Yankees vs Red Sox debate here sometimes..?
There is very much a love/hate relationship with Pete Rose among baseball faithful."Charlie Hustle" is loved and revered for the way he played with a wreckless, win at any cost attitude.
Rose finished his career with more hits (4,256) Games Played (3,562) and at Bats (14,053) than any other player in history.
His blue collar attitude and the success both he, and the Cinncinatti Reds enjoyed from 1972-76, winning the world series in 1975 1976 made him an icon people could identify with. Rose won another World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980.
As a player, Pete Rose was loved.
It was as a manager, however, that Rose's image began to take a beating.
In 1989, a report was submitted to then-comissioner Bart Giamatti by his special council, John M. Dowd.
The report detailed how Rose, gambled and wagered not only on baseball, but on his own team. As a result, Rose was placed on permanent ineligability due to the precident set by Judge Kennisaw Mountain Landis during the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal in which eight players from the Chicago White Sox were banned for life for throwing the World Series.
Rose, until recently, denied the allegations of betting on baseball. Since that time, Rose has gone as far as to say he was betting on his team "every night to win."
With the way Rose was loved, coupled the way that baseball klings to its history, he not only fell out of favor, but was villified.
Many view this as an effort by Rose to gain addmitance into the hall of fame, but Comissioner Bud Selig has yet to make a decision.
This, my friends, is why Pete Rose is not liked. He lied, admitted to lying, and has consistantly changed his story ever since. It is his moral fiber as a man, not as a player that sets him apart.
Michael Jordan has admitted to large losses in gambeling, but it was never on basketball, at least he was never caught. Jordan has never lied about his gambling the way Rose did.
