Baseball rule question?
Question:I hit a ground ball to the pitcher. He fields it and I run to first base. NOW Im not sure if I was running in the foul area or down the line(I know I wasnt running to the left of the foul line to interfere with the throw) and the first baseman blocks the bag so I cant run to first without jumping over him and running back to tag the bag OR without landing my spikes on his legs. Is this obstruction?

You can just run him over and it might be called obstruction depending on the umpires' opinion.Did Gil Meche really outpitch Curt Schilling today?
When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal "Obstruction."If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batterrunner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall advance without liability to be put out.
I believe so. The first baseman has to stay on the base and/or in fair territory, so it is obstruction.
BET, the Red Sox will get it now.?
if he is blocking your way to the bag then you can run over him step on him, basically whatever you want.Who do you think is the better rivalry cubs and cards or yanks and red sox?

Will the red sox win the al east?
This just happened a few days ago in the Angel game. It wasn't intentional obstruction, the throw was just into the baseline. However, the rule allows for the umpires discretion, and they are very reluctant to call it. I would just run the first baseman over, either you will be safe, or it forces the umpires hand to call interference."By the rules of baseball, a runner has the right to an unobstructed path to a base. However, this right is not granted if the fielder guarding the base possesses the ball or is in the process of catching the ball."
So, if you and the ball are arriving there at the same time, then it is *not* obstruction. However, if you get there well before the ball, then the first baseman is guilty of obstructing your path, and you should be awarded the base.
It should be noted that this is very much a judgement call by the umpire which we all know is less than perfect.
Did the Texas Rangers make a mistake in signing Eric Gagne?
depends on the ump. if he was trying to field the ball then no, if he was just standing there then yes.Ok you stanky YANKEES, are you ready for the pin-stripe execution @ 8 tonite?
We need more information. Better yet, we actually need to see the play. The first baseman can block the base if he needs to be in that position to receive a throw that's well on its way. Otherwise, he cannot be guilty of obstructing you unless you actually need to alter your path to the base to avoid running into him, or if you run into him.
Under National Federation rules, which govern most high school leagues, the runner cannot maliciously run into a fielder, regardless of whether the fielder is obstructing the runner. Plowing through the first baseman just because he's in your way would be malicious contact.
When Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's record how should he handle it?
Simple Play.If the fielder is in position and about to receive a throw, it is legal. A fielder may be anywhere he needs to be for the purpose of making a play.
If he is in that position and the throw for whatever reason is not coming, it could be ruled obstruction if your path is impeded or otherwise altered by his positioning. No contact is necessary but it makes the call easier. Official Rule 7.06 covers Obstruction.

I don't know the rule--maybe 14-year ump will--but I'd just have to knock the bastard over. I never got called out the two times I nailed a bag Bogart.More Questions & Answers...
