How do I walk on to a college softball team?

Question:I have been playing since I was 5 but my junior year I was diagnosed with a thyroid disease and I had to sit out my junior and senior year. My sophomore year I was on varsity. I'm trying to get my body back in shape and I really miss playing. How are my chances? Should I not even attempt to walk on at a D1 school? How do I go about it? I know they start with fall ball, but when are try outs?

Answers:

The Giants have looked pretty good the last two games, what are they doing different now than before?

Each school is set up differently, but eMailing the coach maybe a good start (athletic directors are probably too busy).

At a D1 school you're clearly going to have to work harder to prove yourself, but it's definately worth a try. No regrets!

When Bill Mueller hit 2 grand slams in the same game, where was the game?

My sister played D1 softball.
Most schools will take as many walk ons that are capable of playing at that level.

Your old high school team should be in season right now. Ask the coach if you can condition and practice with them.

I would go to your college's Athletic Department and ask for the Assitant coach's name and office numbers. Start there. See if you can meet with him or her for 10 mins. The assitant coach usually handles those type of things.

Start with the AD office. Good Luck!

Which was the worst Yankee pitcher signing: Igawa or Pavano?

First of all, pick a school that you'd want to attend even if not playing softball (you are going for an education first and foremost). Second, confirm that you are academically eligible to play at that school (GPA, SAT or ACT scores). You'll also need to apply to the NCAA Clearinghouse (your high school advisor can help you there). Make a skills video and mail it to the softball department with a cover letter stating your intention to try to walk-on; be sure to include your e-mail address. The coaches will contact you and let you know if they have space for you. Good luck!

More power in my swing?

If you are unable to determine when and if tryouts are held, I recommend you play intramural softball. You could be noticed if you are playing superbly, and offered a tryout. Your chances depend, of course, on how well you play, the strength of your D1's program, and the team's needs.

In the alternative, you could write to the program's manager and state your circumstances and indicate your desire.

Best wishes!
