boston is ranked 23 in population but are ranked #3 in the forbes valuations because they make smart business decision has owning 80% of a network(nesn) 33% of a radio station and 50% of a nascar team to crosspromote the red sox and the team. would this be a good idea to be run like the red sox they just won in 2004 maybe other teams will win more.

Population has little to do with it. They sell out every game. They make a TON of money on their TV deal - have owners with deep pockets - and again, sell out every game with the second most expensive average ticket price in the league. And did I mention they make a TON on their broadcast fees?? And make a ton on merchandising? The Red Sox are not a small market team. They draw from all surrounding areas. It is just in the city limits that they are 23. Small market teams are teams like Milwaukee and KC - Not a lot of high population areas around the park - not a lot of revenue from merchandising and broadcasts. And most importantly - no deep pockets to pay for any player on the market.
