Does putting backspin on a ball when pitching in softball does it effect the way it comes off the bat?

Baseball-is there such a thing as a delayed dead ball?

If you can do it properly, the backspin will tend to induce more groundballs than usual. The trick is to get it spinning really well, something I personally had a hard time doing.

I had a much easier time putting a lateral spin on it, sort of like throwing a hook in bowling. As a righty that made the ball slide right to left as it approached the plate, which let me pitch inside to righties or slide it in on lefties.

Don't forget up and down placement too -- throwing it just a bit softer will end it up lower in the zone, and I used to get alot of groundballs that way.
